01 / Start with your situation
Who will own the business?
The owners and the activity shape the route.
Start here before preparing paperwork.
Saudi or GCC owners
Saudi and eligible GCC investors can use the domestic incorporation route.
A GCC company with foreign shareholders needs a separate ownership check.
Check your ownership routeAn overseas company
Confirm the investment category and MISA registration requirements for the activity and owners.
Decide between a Saudi subsidiary and a branch before preparing company records.
Understand investment registrationA foreign individual
Establish which investment route you qualify for before choosing the company structure.
An ordinary iqama alone is not investment eligibility. Premium Residency has specific eligibility and document treatment.
Understand foreign ownershipProfessional or restricted activity? Check the specific partner, qualification and approval conditions. A general ownership rule is not enough.
One decision worth a closer look
Compare company forms: LLC, JSC, SJSC and branch
Limited liability company (LLC)
Can have one or more individual or corporate owners. The company has separate liability; capital and activity conditions still need checking.
Joint-stock company (JSC)
Can have one or more founders. The general issued-capital minimum is SAR 500,000, with at least one quarter paid up. Additional activity conditions can apply.
Simplified joint-stock company (SJSC)
Has a more flexible governance framework. The Companies Law’s JSC minimum-capital rule does not apply, but activity-specific requirements still matter.
Foreign-company branch
A separate registration route for an existing overseas company—not a new subsidiary. Review parent-company responsibility and permitted activities before choosing it.
This comparison is not a recommendation. Agree capital, management and ownership before preparing constitutional documents. See the official sources.

Domestic routes do not automatically need the MISA stage. Sector approvals may alter the sequence; company registration alone does not authorise every activity.

Not a paperwork maze.
Gather the common information first. Then add the evidence your selected route requires.

Supporting questions
How do I register a company in Saudi Arabia?
Confirm the activity and ownership route first. Complete investment registration where required, then use the relevant incorporation service for the company documents and CR. Check operational permissions separately before starting the licensed activity.
Does every investor need MISA registration?
No. The route depends on the owners and activity. Saudi and eligible GCC investors have a domestic route; foreign participation in a GCC company can change that assessment.
Can I have an English company name?
The Ministry of Commerce provides Arabic and English trade-name reservation. The proposed name must meet the naming conditions and be accepted; availability is not guaranteed.
How long does company registration take?
There is no reliable single duration for every business. Document preparation, investment registration where needed, incorporation, banking and operational approvals are distinct stages. Agree a route-specific schedule after checking the application.
Must I renew my Saudi CR every year?
The current requirement is annual confirmation of registration data. Other licences, registrations and subscriptions may have separate update or renewal requirements.
Can I start trading as soon as my CR is issued?
Not automatically. Confirm the permissions attached to your activity and premises. Company formation and permission to operate are different milestones.
